Ride Leuven

Do you have fond memories of the 2021 Road World Championships in Flanders, now 3 years ago, too? Would you like to relive that incredible atmosphere? You can! Thursday 15 August will see “Ride Leuven”, a wonderful cycling event in and around Leuven inviting young & old to join us in cycling and cheering on the cyclists in a summery setting.

Are you a trained cyclist looking for that little bit extra? Then sign up for 75km or 110km and tackle the World Championships hills of the Flandrien loop in the Druivenstreek.

The city centre in Leuven will be closed to traffic throughout the day. Those who wants to cycle leisurely through the city, can do a local loop of 20 km, which will be open to recreational cyclists between 11:00 am and 1 pm. After that, the circuit will be reserved for the pro race (Tour of Leuven). Everybody is welcome: young and old, beginners and experts, with family or alone, … You will enjoy an animated and carefree cycle route.

Discover the course

After starting at the Heverlee sports hall, the Flandrien loop is up first. The first kilometres between Leuven and the Druivenstreek are an ideal warm-up before entering Huldenberg. This is the signal for the climbing to begin. From here you are faced with some real gut-busting hills like the Smeysberg, Mommaertsstraat and S curve in Overijse. Everyone was on the edge of their seats watching the riders get to grips with these hills during the World Championships. You can still see the thousands of supporters lining the road and the Belgian contingent in the peloton whizzing by. The succession of climbs is followed by some quiet kilometres allowing you can take a breather. Finish with the beautiful city loop in Leuven. Make sure to complete the last 20 km (traffic-free city loop) sometime between 11:00 am and 1 pm, as the circuit will be closed for the pro race afterwards. With just under 800 vertical metres, the 75 km ride is definitely not to be underestimated!

If you really want to test your legs, we recommend the 110 km ride. After the start in Heverlee, as with the short distance, the heavier stuff follows in Overijse and surroundings with slopes that follow in quick succession. Via Boutersem and Pellenberg, the final sprint takes you towards the finish in the heart of Leuven. ride! This final stretch features a few more climbs which will certainly put the legs to the test. The long distance also finishes with a nostalgic city loop around Leuven that takes you back to the World Championships. Make sure to complete the last 20 km (traffic-free city loop) sometime between 11:00 am and 1 pm, as the circuit will be closed for the pro race afterwards. With around 1,050 meters’ elevation, this course has everything in store for a challenging and beautiful ride!

Health

The organisers advise everyone to avoid any form of strenuous physical activity for which they are not adequately prepared. Make sensible choices about the distance you ride and/or the pace you set for yourself.

Anyone who aims to improve performance and compete at a high intensity should see a (specialised sports) physician annually for a check-up. There is no requirement to produce a medical certificate.

It is up to the participant to decide how to use the information resulting from a medical check-up. The organisers cannot be held liable in this respect.

Ride with us and support Younited Cycling

Besides being a relaxing activity, cycling is also a powerful tool. Under the flag of ‘My Team, My Home’, Younited Cycling builds cycling teams where everyone is welcome and included.

Their participants are experts in daily survival who fight against vulnerability in housing, mental health, well-being, poverty, migration or addiction.

In their peloton, they find more than just teammates, they find a home. They are coached by social workers who give them a warm welcome and individual attention, to guide them both on and off the bike.

Additional funding is needed to help Younited Cycling grow. Your contribution can also help. When registering online, you have the option to donate 5, 10 or 15€ for Younited Cycling.
